BRIEF HISTORY
The SR-71 Blackbird was developed by Lockheed’s secretive Skunk Works division under the leadership of legendary aircraft designer Kelly Johnson. First flown in 1964 and officially entering service in 1966, it was designed as a strategic reconnaissance aircraft for the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War. Its titanium airframe and powerful Pratt & Whitney J58 engines allowed it to cruise at over 2,200 mph — fast enough that surface-to-air missiles simply couldn’t catch it. Over its operational life, no SR-71 was ever shot down by enemy fire. The aircraft was retired in 1998, and several examples are preserved at air and space museums across the United States.
