HISTORY
The P-51 Mustang became famous for its combination of speed, range, maneuverability, and firepower, serving as a long-range escort fighter, strafing aircraft, and reconnaissance platform. More than 14,000 Mustangs were built, including 8,302 D-models; the D-model featured a bubble canopy and six .50-caliber machine guns. The Smithsonian’s P-51D-30-NA, serial 44-74939, was built late in 1945, delivered in July 1945, and never saw combat. After 211 flying hours, it was preserved as a museum aircraft. Today it is painted as Lt. Col. Frederick H. Lefebre’s “Willit Run?” of the 351st Fighter Squadron, 353rd Fighter Group, 8th Air Force.
