BRIEF HISTORY

The Wright Flyer was designed and built by the Wright brothers in their Dayton, Ohio bicycle shop. After years of experiments with gliders and wind tunnels, they achieved powered, controlled flight at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903. The first flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. By the fourth flight that day, the elder brother stayed airborne for 59 seconds and traveled 852 feet. The original Wright Flyer is preserved at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., where it hangs as a testament to human achievement.
