BRIEF HISTORY
The Tiger II entered combat during the Normandy campaign in July 1944. Combining heavy sloped armor with the long-barreled 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71 gun, it was among the most powerful tanks fielded during World War II. Tiger IIs of the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion fought Canadian forces during Operation Atlantic near Caen on July 18, 1944. Although formidable, the vehicle’s great weight, mechanical complexity, fuel demands, and limited production restricted its overall battlefield impact.
